And so once again Belem takes to the sea! She started off the 2011 sailing season on April 8th with a trip to Lorient after three whole weeks in Nantes, her home port, welcoming schoolchildren by the score and several thousand members of the public, most of the time in brilliant sunshine. Only three rainy days out of the whole three weeks... Now that bodes really well for those who are thinking of a holiday in Brittany, especially on board Belem along the Brittany coast!
After long months of wintering in Saint Nazaire for her usual yearly makeover, the dowager vessel of the French sailing fleet graciously made her way up the Loire to Nantes, much to the pleasure of her passengers, guests of a locally-based publicity company, BHD. A great adventure for kids aged 7 to 11 – with the notable exception of Hugo, son of Belem's First Mate, Gabriel Lelan Saint Cast, who came to give the ship the once-over at the grand old age of four months...
The week-ends, Belem was open to the public: more than a thousand a day queued up to see her.
In fact, the continuing success of Belem's yearly visits to Nantes have led the new President of the Belem foundation, Nicolas Plantrou, to announce that, as from next year, the ship's winter quarters would be shortened to allow her to stay longer in the town that saw her launched in 1896...
