The ever-growing popularity of the Belem and her yearly travels induced the Belem Foundation to hold a press conference this year so as to give the 2007 travel program the chance to reach an even wider audience. On February 8th therefore, the national and specialized press were briefed on the main events of the season; this includes the tour of Ireland from July 20th to August 23rd, but also a series of other important events such as a lengthy stopover in Rouen ( March 17th-April 14th), where the Belem will be doing her yearly stint as a floating museum, greeting the public on board. Free visits for all !
The Belem will also figure as guest of honor at the ”Livre & Mer” Festival in Concarneau (April 28th-29th), at the ”Etonnants Voyageurs” Festival in Saint Malo ( May 27th-28th), at the ‘'Bordeaux fête le fleuve” festivities in Bordeaux (June 17th – 24th) and finally, in Boulogne, at the ”Côte d'Opale fête la mer'' nautical events (July 13th – 15th).
Maximum security on board is one of the Belem Foundation's constant aims. Since last year, a new security harness has been added to the already existing ones for all those who climb on the rigging, including the crew. Maritime security is also a major preoccupation for all concerned, which is why Identity Card (or Passport) numbers will have to figure on this year's inscription file and the relevant document must be presented to the Captain at the time of boarding.
January 24th was a sad day for the Belem Foundation, when Jean-Francois Deniau, celebrated writer, diplomat, traveler and passionate lover of the sea, member of the Foundation Board, lost his long and brave struggle against mortal illness. He had been a great and faithful friend to the Belem since his first trip on board in 2002, always ready to take his part in events that could enhance her reputation and presiding over the first Belem Literary Prize in October 2006.
