Even though, strictly speaking, the Belem's 110th anniversary occurred while she was sailing the Strait of Gibraltar, it was in her native port of Nantes that she was really and truly feasted on June 29th. France's favorite three master came breezing in to a warm welcome on Wednesday the 28th; the party took off on the Thursday afternoon: there were sea chanteys sung by a local group, episodes of the Belem's adventures told from the stage, a special news bulletin in the style of the eighteen nineties distributed to the public; then at 6.15p.m. precisely, Commandant Morzadec, the Belem's captain, signaled the order to hoist the original flag of her first owner, Fernand Crouan, a shipbuilder then based in Nantes. 11 canon shots were fired to celebrate the 11 decades of the Belem's long life. Speeches were made by the President of the Belem Foundation and the Mayor of Nantes in honour of the heroin of the day. All in all, it was a jolly good party! The Belem will be coming back to Nantes on October 12th and will be open to the public for four days.
In the meantime, the Belem is and will be stopping in a series of ports along the Atlantic coast, where other celebrations for her 110th birthday have being scheduled. On July 14th, France's National Day, the Belem will be in Cherbourg (Normandy), where a French Naval patrol ship, the Flamant, will be dispatched to pay the Navy's respects for her birthday. From July 29th to 31st, the Belem will be in Lorient (Brittany), in time for the famous Interceltic Festival. And on August 12th and 13th, the three master will be in Noirmoutier, taking part in the town's naval regatta Regates du Bois de la Chaise: a host of prestigious pleasure boats will be sailing all around the Belem at anchor. Finally, on August 20th in Bayonne (Pays Basque), the Belem will be a part of the festivities organised for the 25th anniversary of Itsas Begia, an association dedicated to the conservation of maritime heritage.
Visitors on board the Belem during her stay in Cherbourg were the first to discover a brand new product on sale in the Belem Boutique: a navy blue cap marked Belem 1896. A nice contemporary reminder of the long lost year of her birth... One of the most popular products this summer has been the blue Belem t-shirt with this year's other novelty, the peashirt, coming a close second. For those who tend to favour more artistic interests, a series of very attractive watercolours by the French painter Sophie Ladame will be a charming memento of the good ship Belem on her 110th anniversary...
