Belem may no longer be a luxury yacht belonging to the Duke of Westminster or to a scion of the House of Guinness, she continues nevertheless to attract and captivate many members of today's intelligentsia, be they writers, journalists, film makers, scientists, seafarers, sportsmen...
This, as it happens, was the case this month on two successive trips. From Boulogne to Cherbourg – June 9th to 11th – Belem took aboard François Sarano, oceanographer cum deep sea diver, erstwhile member of Jacques Cousteau's famous underwater team, who has just spent 7 years on the making of Jacques Perrin's much-acclaimed film “Océans”. Those who have seen the film obviously remember the breath-taking scenes of Sarano diving and swimming alongside a great white shark... He is also a passionate and convincing spokesman for the defence of the world's oceans and their underwater population – and the two debates he organised on board Belem with the trainees and the crew gave everybody strong food for thought.
Straight on François Sarano's heels, French journalist Vincent Hilaire boarded Belem in Cherbourg on June 11th for a three day trip to Saint Malo via the Channel Islands of Alderney, Guernsey, Jersey and Chausey. This was his first trip on board Belem – and his article and photographs in this newsletter go to show that even a seasoned journalist feels, just like everybody else, the strong pull on his emotional heartstrings that comes from sailing on this unique ship.
It can safely be said that this will also be the case for those who take part in Belem's trip from Roscoff to Dublin – in time for Bastille Day celebrations on July 14th. She sets sail on July 9th, carrying amongst the trainees 15 young Irish apprentice sailors – some fierce competition between Breton and Irish sailor songs cannot be excluded... Upon arrival, Belem will be greeted by her partner on this occasion, the Alliance Française à Dublin. And for the benefit of any of our readers who may be in Dublin around that time, a huge festive market of French products awaits them on the quay alongside Belem. But whatever you do, don't miss the fun and the dancing on the quay at the Bastille Day “Bal musette” on the evening of July 13th.
