It's all hands on deck these days on board Belem as the ship's winter quarters in Concarneau are rapidly coming to an end and the date of the first sailing trip of the season looms nearer and nearer. Not the least sign of panic, however: the crew are totally in control and our favourite three masted barque will be spic and span and good as new when she reaches Nantes for several days of celebration before taking to the sea on April 12th. As mentioned in our previous Logbook, Belem, and her home port, will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of her return to France – the first of many festive events she will be attending during The Season.
All right, unlike the Victorian maiden ladies attending their first Season, she will not be presented at court... And yet, there may well be Victorian undertones of grandeur when she sails into Cowes harbour on Saturday September 4th. Let's not forget, Queen Victoria's summer residence, Osborne House was on the Isle of Wight. But most of all, Belem will be paying her respects to the Royal Yacht Squadron, which is tantamount to naval royalty... of which she was part when owned by the second duke of Westminster and later by Sir Arthur Ernest Guinness and based in Cowes. There again, a week-end of celebrations is scheduled in what promises to be a very friendly atmosphere. Members of the “Yacht Club de France” will be arriving in Cowes aboard Belem and many descendants of the British crewmen that sailed on her during the Guinness period of her life will be regrouping from all parts of Wight and from the mainland.
On September 6th, Belem will leave Cowes for a sail training trip to Saint Malo, where she is due on the 9th. Anyone interested in joining this particular venture has only

But don't hesitate to give the whole sailing program an extra run-through because it has been duly completed, with an extra trip on June 12th and 13th as well as the September sailings.

Should you decide to join us on board, you may well get to meet Charles Raffin Caboisse, otherwise known as Charly. Actually, not only will you meet him – you will be training under his authority as he has just been promoted to Bos'un after 7 years' sailing aboard Belem. A well-earned promotion for a promising young sailor, just turned 30.
